Are You a REAL mom? You Can Be! In the fall of 1996, former Calvary mom Kelly Hovermale started a MOPS group in order to reach out to moms in our community and church—women who often feel alone as they deal with the day-to-day logistics of raising little children. Many of those original children are now teenagers headed to college, but over the years more moms and kids have been impacted by Calvary’s focused outreach to this group.
Fourteen years later, now as REAL moms (with both an evening and morning group), our group has the same goal and desire—to encourage mothers of preschoolers as moms, as wives, as friends, and in personal and spiritual growth. We still focus on mothers of preschoolers, but we welcome any moms who wish to participate, knowing that this is a place for strong mom-friendships, and older mentors—moms who have “been there”—can help the young moms. Our ministry here is unique, as many who may feel awkward in “church” feel comfortable coming to our meetings where strong relationships are built.
This fall we face a new challenge. We are still in need of Calvary members for our morning and evening REAL moms leadership teams. In faith, we are moving forward. We believe God will bring the leaders we need, but we know we won’t be able to reach out to more women in our community until those empty roles are filled. Our morning group needs more small group leaders and a creative activities coordinator. We also always need childcare workers for our REAL kids. Our evening group still needs a small group coordinator and a hospitality coordinator. Childcare for the evening group is provided through the Wednesday evening programs.
