Disciple U Women–Fall 2015
This Fall (September – December), Calvary Baptist Church will offer several opportunities for you to know and live out God’s life-changing, life-giving Word—either for the first time or in new, deeper ways. There are four opportunities for you to study, learn, be changed by, and respond to God’s Word together with other women.
You can register in the Calvary lobby on Sundays (August 30, September 6 & 13) or mail/bring your registration into the church office. Registration forms are available here– 2015 DUW Fall Registration Form –and at the women’s ministry table in the Calvary lobby.
There are three opportunities on Tuesdays–2 morning and 1 evening–to study 1, 2, 3 John and the topics of rest and peace and Acts. And there is an opportunity on Wednesday evenings to join with other moms to read about, discuss, and encourage one another in parenting. Scroll down for more details!
♦Study 1, 2, 3 John and the topics of Rest and Peace.
Together we’ll study 1, 2, & 3 John using Kelly Minter’s new 7-week study, “What Love Is” as our tool. Then we’ll discover ways to create space and margin in our lives to hear God. We’ll use Priscilla Shirer’s 5-week study, “Breathe”, as our tool.
Here are some details on the two studies from Lifeway…
Breathe by Priscilla Shirer: The Breathe Study Journal includes 5 sessions of teaching by Priscilla Shirer with 4 weeks of homework in a reflective, journaling format. One of the greatest challenges among women in our culture is taking time to stop and cease from all the activities and busyness and just breathe. We are in bondage to busyness. We constantly strive to complete the limitless to-do lists that hinder us from experiencing all that God has for us. We miss the moments because we rush ahead to the next thing. By neglecting time for tranquility, serenity, and repose, we limit our Christlikeness and miss out on some of God’s greatest gifts. It is time for us to breathe and build margin into our lives for God. In the Old Testament, God instituted principles and laws that would transform the Israelites’ mindset. He didn’t just want them legally free; He wanted them to be able to walk in the freedom and enjoy it. So God gave them many gifts, including boundaries in which to enjoy those gifts. Sabbath was intended as a gift, and it is still a gift to us today. If you are weary, worn out, and exhausted the concept of Sabbath will change your life.
What Love Is by Kelly Minter: The letters of 1, 2, & 3 John were written to encourage followers of Jesus to remain faithful to the truth. Believers are challenged to look at contrasting themes such as walking in the light instead of darkness, truth versus lies and deception, loving God more than loving the world, and the meaning of true fellowship and community rather than shallowness. This study reveals not only the heart of John but also the heart of Jesus.
This class will be offered Tuesday mornings and evenings. Tuesday mornings, September 15th-December 8th (9:15-11:30am), and the teacher will be Leanne Windle.
Tuesday evenings, September 15th-December 8th(6:45-8:30pm), and the teachers will be Cheryl Tappen and Kathy Tucker.
♦ Study Acts.
Together we’ll use inductive methods to study the book of Acts. We’ll use the brand-new Precept Upon Precept study on Acts as our tool.
This study is in two parts and we’ll study Part 1—Acts Chapters 1-12 during the Fall Semester. You can also choose to “audit” this study by coming to class and then outside of class, simply study the text of Acts using inductive methods.
Here’s a description of the study from Precept International…
Acts Part 1 – Jesus’ Witnesses, Empowered by His Spirit – (chapters 1-12) (8 lessons–longer lessons will be split throughout the semester)
Luke’s first account was his Gospel in which he recorded all that Jesus began to do and teach. His second account we call Acts, or the Acts of the Apostles, in which Luke recorded what happened after Jesus’ ascension to the Father. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit, empowering the apostles to testify to the power of God in salvation and in living every day for the gospel. Learn how God spread the gospel through witnesses of Jesus’ death and resurrection, and from their examples, how you too can witness to others. Stand in awe of the power of God in believers to endure persecution and suffering for the cause of Christ and embrace His power in your life. Be encouraged by the results of faithful servants holding forth truth in a dark world; watch as the church grows numerically, geographically, and culturally.
This class will be offered Tuesday mornings–September 15th-December 8th–9:15-11:30am. The teacher will be Heidi Fulk.
♦ Read, discuss, and learn about Parenting.
Together with other moms, we’ll find real life examples and practical truth about parenting as we read the book Am I Messing Up My Kids? by Lysa TerKeurst as our tool.
The book includes a chance to study several applicable Bible passages. This group will provide opportunities for moms to encourage and come alongside one another in the midst of motherhood as you read and discuss this book. Here’s a description…
Lysa TerKeurst, mother of five and president of Proverbs 31 Ministries, knows about the bouts of “mommy stress” that come with parenting and managing a home and a life. From her own experience and conversations with hundreds of other women, Lysa shares how mothers can release the guilt they sometimes feel and stop blaming their parenting skills:
– every time a child does something wrong
– let kids live with the consequences of their bad choices
– simplify life to create breathing room
– quit comparing themselves to “perfect” moms
– turn to God for support, guidance, and patience
Overflowing with practical ideas, short Bible studies, and plenty of encouragement, this inspiring resource will help moms to realize that―with God’s wisdom and mercy―they can experience peace and satisfaction while raising their kids.
This group will meet Wednesday evenings (6:30-8pm–during “club times”), September 16th—December 9th, and the leader will be Donna Shinn.
